The Five Animal Frolics Qigong – Jeffrey Yuen

The Five Animal Frolics Qigong online course is delivered by Master Jeffrey Yuen.

The very popular Wu Qin Xi, “The Five Animal Frolics” qigong, is attributed to Hua Tuo, one of the most prominent doctors of ancient times, who lived in China between 140 and 208 A.D. (second part of the Han dynasty).

According to Master Jeffrey C. Yuen, in inventing this kind of qigong, Hua Tuo was inspired by the simplicity of life. The doctors of Ancient China have tried to find a convenient and easy-to-use system of basic care. Definitely, movement and exercise are a powerful tool, a resource at everybody’s reach, suitable to balance the energies of body and mind.

Jeffrey C. Yuen proposes Hua Tuo’ qigong , inviting us to fully understand the essence of each movement, in order to master this viable therapeutic tool.

Over time, many different versions of this exercise have been established. The one that master Jeffrey C. Yuen proposes us, is particularly focused on the connection between breathing and sound. Voice emissions occur on the basis of specific phonemes, both in the inspiratory and in the expiratory phase.

The sequence of the form, is not based on the five elements theory but rather on the three levels of qi:

  • weiqi, “protective qi” (Lung-Liver, Lu-Lr);
  • yingqi, “nourishing qi” (Heart-Spleen, Ht-Sp);
  • yuanqi, “source qi” (Kidney, Ki).

Each of these levels is considered according to the psychosocial model of meridians, which Jeffrey Yuen has explained during his luo vessels master course. Accordingly, the exercise is subdivided in the following triad:

  • Survival: bear, tiger;
  • Interaction: deer, monkey;
  • Differentiation: crane.

These three instances define human existence.

Master Jeffrey Yuen also suggests that, understanding the essence of these movements, results in liberating gestures, which allow us to consciously master the form.
It is by grasping the nature of Hua Tuo’s exercises, by understanding the essence of the movements, that we are enabled to creatively adapt the gestures to our own characteristics, making them more concise and essential. Once we have grasped the energetic meaning of a given animal, once the underlying principle of the exercise has been assimilated, it will then be possible to place it in the context of the 5 elements.

“Your qigong will become your dance, your way of expressing life”.
